FIRST IMPRESSIONS

height. 6'5" (yeah I'm going back to his official Marvel-sanctioned height, pretend he was always 6'5" in previous threads!!!!) build. Tall, broad shouldered and athletic. He's actually pretty jacked under his clothes. Lee Pace in Foundation is a pretty solid representation of his height/build. hair. Ginger, a bit longer than shoulder length, almost always tied back in a ponytail. eyes. Blue distinguishing marks. His super cool ponytail. Fabian used to have some totally sick scars on his chest from Wolverine, but alas, resurrection wiped his physical slate clean. fashion. Rich bitch. When he isn't running around in spandex, Fabian favors tailored, fashionable outfits in layers, including button-downs, waistcoats, etc. I cannot stress enough how much he loves capes, long jackets, and other swishy things, which he'll incorporate into his outfits whenever possible. Oh yeah, and he'll usually be wearing gloves, too. Even when he's dressed more casually, in jeans, lounge wear, sweaters, hoodies, etc. Fabian will only wear the finest, most luxurious and expensive versions of these things.

When at the Gray Room, he tends to dress in tighter, more revealing (read: slutty) outfits, generally to his Dominant's taste, and will often get mistaken for a sex worker. He will not dress this way outside of the Gray Room, however. demeanor. Rich bitch. Fabian usually has an air of smug, snobbish superiority, and he tries to carry himself like the royalty he so desperately wishes he was. When dealing with somebody he sees as potentially valuable (anyone with power, especially if they have power over him), Fabian may switch scripts and become overly gracious, respectful, and at times subservient. It's often totally insincere and just a ploy to either curry favor or save his own skin. Unfortunately, he's prone to shrieking, unhinged tantrums when things don't go his way, so that tends to reveal his true, spoiled nature pretty easily. All in all, he's egotistical, petty, spoiled, insincere, entitled, and insecure... He's basically got the most rancid vibes when he's not putting on an act of being a deferential follower or a fanatical cult leader. voice. American accent, probably a bit of Californian in his voice (because I've decided he's from the West Coast). He will usually default to a (very insincere) flowery, pretentious, formal way of speaking. However, it's totally affected, and once he drops the act, he just sounds like a regular, casually speaking dude, full of swearing, contractions, slang, and other speech characteristics he'd probably judge as low class coming from anyone else. He's prone to whining and yelling, too. Enjoy the dulcet sounds of his voice as he chews the scenery in the animated series, as a treat. scent. Fabian probably smells like a tasteful amount of whatever high end products he likes to use for bathing, aftershave, cologne, hair care etc. mental. His brain's just a messy, miserable place filled with insecurity and self loathing, so have fun with that, psychics! MEDICAL. Fabian seems to be in pretty great health, with no issues to speak of. Also, he is a mutant, if your character can somehow, like, sense such things.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

What if the worst person in the world had truly benevolent powers? Thaaaat's our boy! Fabian's a mutant with the ability to manipulate other mutants' powers, and he comes with bonus healing abilities. In spite of this, he's spent pretty much the entirety of his comics history trying to use his powers to screw over other mutants.

His primary powers only work on other mutants (or metahumans and adjacent types, for the purposes of RP), which means that the only thing he can do to humans is... heal them. Given that he's a mutant supremacist with a huge chip on his shoulder, he probably considers this a great cosmic insult. Or he would, if he had any idea that he could heal humans! Anyway, he is, effectively, human if he doesn't have any mutants nearby to augment, a fact that makes him very salty and insecure.

Power Manipulation. Cortez has the ability to both augment or dampen other mutants' powers, usually through touch, though he's shown directing it from a short distance at times, too. He can cause other mutants to lose control of their abilities and burn themselves out. This power only works on his fellow mutants, and while he's learned to take advantage of that and use it to make himself indispensable to others, it did cause an inferiority complex and bitterness in him that took root when he was a gawky adolescent, disappointed in his newly manifested powers.

One side effect of his power boosting is a feeling of an incredible rush, almost like a bump of mutant cocaine. (He's been described as an energy drink with a man bun.) He can also choose infuse his abilities with an addictive quality, making them almost like a drug that grants temporary 'fixes' that amplify one's powers and gives them a good hit of adrenaline, while weakening them in the long run.
Healing. Since his Krakoan resurrection, Cortez has also gained the ability to legitimately heal others, humans and mutants alike. He can repair broken bones, internal injuries, illnesses, and infections, though the extent or limits of his healing powers haven't really been outlined, and likely even he doesn't know just how far he can take it. He's probably not capable of healing terminal conditions, chronic illnesses, missing limbs, etc.

And so, hilariously, his powers finally work on humans... and he can't do anything to hurt them. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy!
Combat. In addition to his mutant powers, Cortez is also skilled at combat, mostly in the use of firearms, though he's shown to be capable with hand-to-hand and knives. He's not, like, amazing, though, and tends to get subdued, tossed around, and otherwise beaten pretty regularly. He can fight dirty, though! Anyway, people have, on more than one occasion, resorted to pulling his hair. How undignified...

PERMISSIONS

BACKTAGGING. Yes. I go through periods when I'm very, very slow due to work and after-work obligations, so I rely pretty heavily on backtags. I'm always happy to handwave things, as well. THREADHOPPING. Always a yes for Network-type threads; ask first for prose/log/action. FOURTHWALLING. I'm cool with fourthwalling of Marvel/X-Men in general, but I can't see much reason for any character to fourthwall Cortez, specifically. He's not exactly a Wolverine-tier presence in pop culture OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS & TRIGGERS. None, though I'll generally avoid scenes or plots that involve cruelty to animals or animals in distress.
PHYSICAL AFFECTION. He's not used to affection because his personality tends to repulse people, but go ahead! It probably won't be reciprocated! PHYSICAL VIOLENCE. Go for it, he practically invites it with his general... everything. RELATIONSHIPS. He's such a messy, insecure, toxic person that any relationship with him will take a lot of work, but it's possible in theory? The most likely outcome is a pretty unhealthy relationship, if any, but I'm game for writing any kind of dynamic. PSYCHIC & PSIONIC. He has no psychic defenses, so it's open season here. Hell, his insecurity is so obvious that you don't even need to be a telepath to see it. MAGIC. Again, he has no defenses here, go for it.
WARNINGS. Themes of extermination and bigotry run pretty heavily through the X-Men, and Fabian's a case of a highly privileged person who's both marginalized (mutant) and bigoted (against humans). I try to be proactive and check people's permissions posts to make sure I'm not stepping into any triggering or off-limits subjects in his interactions, but if you want to opt out of anything at all, just shoot me a message!

(Also, my plans are for him to work on his anti-human bigotry, so in time a lot of this generalization, stereotyping, etc will fade.)

Cortez also has a history of being a misogynistic creep, using eugenicist language, and has in the past kidnapped, endangered, and threatened to harm a child. These aspects of him haven't really been played up in his Krakoa era appearances, and tbh I have no real interest in writing them. But if it ever comes up, I'll include content warnings for child endangerment, misogyny, eugenics, and other relevant issues.

Other Preferences: He's very much drawn to partners who exude strength and power, and on some level just wants to be bullied and called names. Also, he has a tendency to be a pillow queen. General Notes: Small warning that some of the kinks under IC Faves are things that he won't admit to enjoying, so consent may not be enthusiastic to start. He may protest, complain, or try to avoid those kinks because of insecurity and an aversion to being vulnerable, but ultimately he's very much into them.

OOC Yes runs the gamut of things he's indifferent to and may not think to suggest, to things he's not into and will probably need more convincing. If the latter, he's more likely to get pissy and upset about it, and may lead to negative cr, which I'm all for. I'm open to writing just about anything, provided we can make it work IC. If you don't see something mentioned here, that means I either forgot it exists or you can assume it's a 'Maybe' and we can make it happen!

Also, as a general rule, I'd rather handwave/fade to black on most regular vanilla encounters, unless there's significant character development or conversation going on in the scene.

Headcanon Notes

here's some stupid assorted headcanon for my own reference

he's blue blooded old old old money. family's been in the Americas since the days of Spanish colonialism
Despite what's said in some older material, Fabian's not from Europe, and he's not royalty. His dad's side of the family still has a lot of direct connections to Spain, but he and his father, and his father's father, etc. are ultimately American. And while he is fairly fluent in Spanish, it's not his first language. (If it was, then you know he would have been peppering all of his dialogue with it in any of his 90's appearances, and he doesn't even utter so much as a single sí in over 30 years of comics.)
He's also extremely ostentatious about his Spanish pronunciation.
He probably also speaks a fair amount of French. I assume a lot of rich kids learn French.
Grew up in California. Where in California, I don't know, just some ultra bougie area that has a heavy Spanish influence.
he definitely went to a fancy prep school or boarding school or whatever the monstrously wealthy do with their kids. I've deduced this like Sherlock Holmes because 1) he's rich and 2) in the scant glimpses we get of his childhood, he's wearing a tie and blazer, so either that's a school uniform or he was raised with this mentality. What 13 year old would just wear a suit for fun?
Speaking of the scant glimpses of his childhood, I've also deduced that his parents were so disengaged that they didn't actually know or cared what he liked. Because there are clowns at his 13th birthday party (alongside NBA players and a private jet), and I've never heard of any 13 year old being into clowns. I can only assume that his mother was like "what do children like? Clowns? Sure, let's add those to the party package, too"
speaking of his mother, let's get into family headcanon. I figure his dad's multi-gen American, but still has strong ties to his European roots; maybe abuela's from Spain. His mom's European. Let's go with French. She's from some blue blood family and, as an idly wealthy socialite, had a small career modeling or designing purses or something. Since she's also ginger, Fabian's looks take after his mother. And let's say his and Anne-Marie's height comes from her side of the family, too.
Anne-Marie's the older sibling, which I've decided just now. she wasn't living at the family estate when his x-gene activated.
speaking of siblings, I figure he has to have at least one more sibling, most likely a brother, because I don't think a family of his pedigree or whatever would just be like "yeah fuck it, we'll let our branch of the Cortez family tree die here." There had to be another heir so they could punt Fabian and Anne-Marie to the curb
tbh it's also possible that they DIDN'T actually disown him, I mean, they were still giving him money and property. he's just a spoiled princess who wanted more
actually I've just decided he's the youngest child in his family because he kind of does give spoiled, useless youngest son energy. Which means he was already kind of dismissed by his dad, coddled by his mom, and knew he had no claim to the majority of his family's estate to begin with.
he has a completely useless vanity degree from a prestigious university. it's not useless because of the specifics of his major or anything like that; it's useless because Fabian didn't actually care, took his education for granted, and paid somebody else to do half the work for him

Has he ever really dated, or has his romantic life been a series of unsatisfying hookups? Probably the latter. And I'm guessing the bulk of his experience was in the high school/college stage in his life because he's FAR TOO BUSY AND IMPORTANT AND ~~REPELLENT~~ PICKY NOW
Oh yeah since he writes poetry and claims he can play the banjo (why???), and is a big fan of Dazzler to the point where he enjoys her more experimental work, I figure the arts are one of the few things he genuinely enjoys and appreciates
New headcanon tidbit: he's a pretty good artist and will probably get back into it in Duplicity out of sheer boredom eventually. Also I've decided he designed the original Acolytes uniforms, mostly as an excuse to give himself a glorious cape
The Upstarts were supposed to be a bunch of hedonists, but Shinobi's the only one we ever actually see it from. Therefore, I've decided that Fabian had a decadent slut era in his late teens/early 20s, which he moved away from once he got 'disowned' and became consumed with bitterness. He may have fooled around with a few of the other Acolytes here and there, but once his traitorous tendencies became public knowledge, that spelled the end of his ability to get laid by fellow mutants. Hence his very, very long dry spell before Duplicity.
He once tried to learn Japanese solely to figure out if Shinobi was using it to talk shit about him.
Fabian's first bj came from a friend of a distant cousin he met on one of his many family holidays in Spain. It was perfectly adequate
Fabian's first experience with anal was with a closeted lacrosse player in high school or college idk how old he was, anyway they were both drunk and it was fumbling and awful
